Definition

Dropshipping is a retail fulfillment model in which a merchant sells products without holding inventory—when a customer places an order, the merchant transmits the order directly to a third-party supplier or manufacturer who ships the product directly to the customer. A marketplace model extends this concept by enabling multiple third-party sellers to list and sell products on a single platform, with the platform operator typically handling payments, customer service, and quality standards while sellers manage their own inventory and fulfillment. Both models allow retailers to expand product assortment significantly without capital investment in physical inventory.

AI plays an increasingly important role in operating dropship and marketplace models at scale. Automated supplier matching and onboarding tools use AI to assess supplier reliability, catalog quality, and pricing competitiveness. Machine learning models detect fraudulent or policy-violating listings before they are published. Dynamic pricing engines continuously adjust prices based on supplier cost changes, competitor pricing, and demand signals across thousands of third-party sellers.
