Definition

Dynamic pricing is the practice of adjusting prices in real time or near-real time based on current market conditions, demand signals, competitor prices, inventory levels, customer segments, or other contextual variables. Underpinned by machine learning models and pricing optimization algorithms, modern dynamic pricing systems continuously evaluate available signals and compute price recommendations or autonomous price changes across large product catalogs and multiple channels simultaneously.

In e-commerce and retail, dynamic pricing is most visibly associated with travel (airlines, hotels) and marketplaces (Amazon, where millions of prices change daily), but adoption is expanding across grocery, consumer electronics, fuel, and B2B commerce. The strategic benefit is margin optimization — capturing more revenue when demand is high and defending volume when competitive pressure intensifies. The risks include customer perception of unfairness, especially when price changes are visible within a single session, and regulatory scrutiny in sectors where dynamic pricing intersects with essential goods. Effective dynamic pricing programs invest as much in governance, guardrails, and customer communication as in the underlying models.
