Marketing attribution is the analytical process of assigning credit to the marketing touchpoints—ads, emails, organic search, social posts, and others—that contributed to a customer conversion or purchase. Attribution models range from simple rules-based approaches (first-touch, last-touch, linear) to sophisticated data-driven models that use machine learning to weight each interaction according to its actual influence on the buying decision.
Accurate attribution is foundational to optimizing marketing spend in commerce. Without it, budget flows toward channels that appear influential by coincidence rather than causation. AI-powered attribution models process high-dimensional customer journey data across online and offline channels, accounting for time decay, cross-device behavior, and incrementality. The result is more defensible budget allocation, clearer measurement of campaign ROI, and tighter feedback loops between marketing execution and revenue outcomes.
