Google's Universal Commerce Protocol enables AI agent shopping discovery.

Google, Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart launched the Universal Commerce Protocol to standardize how AI agents read store catalogs, pricing and availability—turning on a layer of AI discoverability across millions of storefronts this year. For retailers, AI-referred traffic converted 60% higher than non-AI visits in July and generated 53% more revenue per visit, making visibility in AI recommendations a critical competitive priority heading into peak season.

Google's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart, standardized how AI agents read a store's catalog, pricing and availability, switching on a layer of AI discoverability across millions of storefronts this year (Retail Dive - Technology). Shopify enabled the protocol by default for eligible merchants with no setup required, while Stripe's Agentic Commerce Suite offers a comparable path for merchants on WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Wix, Squarespace and Etsy (Retail Dive - Technology).

The opportunity spans retailers of all sizes. AI-referred visits to U.S. retail sites converted 60% higher than non-AI traffic in July and generated 53% more revenue per visit (Retail Dive - Technology). On Shopify, 75% of AI-attributed orders in the second quarter came from outside the platform's top 100 product categories, signaling strong potential for specialty retailers (Retail Dive - Technology). Most retailers already have the foundational infrastructure—product databases, imagery and commerce systems—needed to participate; much of what is labeled "agentic readiness" builds on capabilities retailers have long possessed.

Retailers can assess their AI readiness through free tools that run diagnostic checks on catalog access, bot visibility and checkout capabilities. The readiness journey progresses through four stages: discoverable, understandable, actionable and measurable, with most of the market currently at the discovery stage. As AI shopping evolves rapidly, experts recommend starting with existing infrastructure rather than building proprietary integrations, and choosing technology partners that preserve merchant-of-record status, customer data ownership and flexibility to pivot.
