Promotion optimization is the application of data science and machine learning to determine the best combination of promotional offers—discounts, bundles, free shipping thresholds, loyalty multipliers—to achieve a defined business objective such as revenue maximization, margin protection, inventory clearance, or customer acquisition. Optimization models evaluate the interaction effects between promotions, customer segments, and competitive context to recommend offers that outperform intuition-based or rule-based approaches.

In retail and e-commerce, poorly designed promotions erode margin without generating incremental revenue because they reward customers who would have purchased anyway. AI-driven promotion optimization addresses this by estimating incrementality—how much additional purchase behavior a given offer actually causes—and targeting promotions only to segments where the lift justifies the cost. Advanced implementations operate in real time, personalizing offer depth and type at the individual level, and continuously learning from redemption data to improve future recommendations.
