Agentic Commerce Crosses 50% US Consumer Adoption Milestone

More than half of US consumers now actively use AI to shop, with agentic commerce driving 11.4% of transactions that result in purchase, according to NIQ tracking data released in Q3 2026. Commerce teams must optimize product representation across answer engines, retailer agents, and personal shopping agents—the four emerging selling surfaces reshaping how consumers discover and buy online.

NIQ, a leading consumer behavior tracker, announced a significant milestone: more than half of US consumers actively use AI to shop (Retailgentic). Agentic commerce transactions have grown from 4.5% in July 2024 to 11.4% by Q3 2026, representing sustained momentum in consumer adoption of AI-driven shopping tools (Retailgentic).

The commerce landscape now features four distinct agentic selling surfaces: answer engines, retailer agents, personal agents, and brand/retailer websites with on-site AI capabilities (Retailgentic). Retailers and brands are investing in next-generation on-site agents, AI-powered search engines, and advanced personalization systems to compete in this environment. For practitioners, ensuring accurate product representation—including correct product cards, offer details, and purchase links—across all four surfaces is now essential to capture agentic commerce traffic.

Major platforms are advancing their autonomy levels: Amazon's AFS reached Level 4.5 with auto-buy features and reported 350 million consumers using the tool with 40% higher spending per order, while Walmart's Sparky expanded from mobile-only to full web presence (Retailgentic). Personal shopping agents from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and others are expected to launch or upgrade imminently, further fragmenting the agentic commerce ecosystem.
