Amazon's BFI4 fulfillment center in Kent, Washington, opened in 2016 and is the first in the company's network capable of handling more than 1 million items per day (Retail Dive - Technology). The facility combines approximately 3,500 associates with robotics and automation technology to stow, pick, and pack products at scale. Incoming parcels arrive by truck and are unloaded onto conveyor belts, then stowed into inventory pods by employees at Universal Stations.
The warehouse employs Hercules robots to transport inventory pods—which span four floors—to Amazon Robotics Semi-Automated Workstations (ARSAWs) and Universal stations, eliminating the need for associates to walk to shelves (Retail Dive - Technology). At ARSAWs, projector lights guide employees to the correct items during picking, and items are placed into totes for routing. For packing, the facility uses a CW1000 packaging machine with advanced sensors that measure items and apply precise amounts of wrapping material, reducing excess packaging waste. Manual packing stations are also equipped with automated tape dispensers and guidance systems to help associates select appropriate box sizes.
This hybrid model of human workers and automation addresses a key challenge for high-volume commerce operations: maintaining throughput while minimizing labor costs and material waste. The approach signals how leading retailers can scale fulfillment without pure automation, instead augmenting associate productivity through robotics and technology-enhanced workstations.
