Shopify unveils Agentic Catalog deep dive with Shop Cat Explorer tool

Retailgentic published a comprehensive analysis of Shopify's Agentic Catalog, introducing the Shop Cat Explorer tool to help merchants understand how product data flows to AI agents. The breakdown reveals critical insights into Shopify's $500B global GMV distribution and how agentic commerce is reshaping product discovery for the platform's 1.1M US merchants.

Retailgentic released an in-depth exploration of Shopify's Agentic Catalog offering, addressing widespread confusion among merchants about how the system works (Retailgentic). The analysis reveals that AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores grew 3x year-over-year, with orders from AI searches also growing 3x and new-buyer orders from AI channels arriving at nearly 2x the rate of other channels (Retailgentic). Half of AI-referred sessions landed directly on product detail pages—2.5x the rate of traditional search—and 75% of AI-attributed orders came from outside Shopify's top 100 categories (Retailgentic).

To clarify how Shopify's Catalog API surfaces product data to agents, Retailgentic built the Shop Cat Explorer (SCE), a visualization tool that lets merchants see exactly what information is exposed to AI systems (Retailgentic). The Shopify Agentic Commerce Stack comprises four layers: the core Catalog product database, the Catalog API as the access layer, Agentic Storefronts for merchant controls, and Universal Checkout Platform (UCP) for transaction rails (Retailgentic). Shopify's Catalog search index now covers more than 1 billion products and handles standardization, enrichment, and relevance ranking—functions critical to ensuring AI agents return accurate, high-converting product recommendations.

The merchant base analysis shows stark distribution: the top 15k stores (1.4% of the 1.1M US merchants) drive 80% of GMV, averaging $14.1M annually, while the remaining 1,085,000 average $50k yearly (Retailgentic). For commerce practitioners, understanding the Catalog API structure is essential to optimizing product metadata, managing agent visibility, and capitalizing on AI-driven traffic patterns that are now a material revenue driver on the platform.
