TikTok is launching an agentic AI shopping experience that enables customers to discover and purchase products directly within the social media platform (Retail Dive - Technology). The experience includes Shopping Assistant, a conversational AI agent that understands context and remembers user needs, providing information on product details, shipping, sizing, and availability. Customers can then complete purchases using Buy Direct, which enables one-click checkout from the For You feed (Retail Dive - Technology).
TikTok is capitalizing on its role as a significant product discovery engine, with 55% of TikTok users saying the platform has helped them make more informed purchasing decisions, and an estimated 54 million U.S. consumers purchasing products after watching TikTok videos (Retail Dive - Technology). However, this strategy creates a fundamental challenge for retailers: when the entire shopping journey occurs outside a brand's ecosystem, the company can lose control over the customer relationship and access to valuable shopper preference data (Retail Dive - Technology). Brands also risk losing experience control—if third-party AI makes mistakes, retailers may get blamed despite having no direct involvement (Retail Dive - Technology).
Some major retailers are already addressing this challenge. The Retail AI Council, which includes McDonald's, Best Buy, and Whole Foods Market, formed the Shopper Context Protocol Working Group to help brands maintain relationships with shoppers using third-party AI tools (Retail Dive - Technology).
