AI discovery tools drive research, but reviews and prices seal sales

New research shows AI assistants like ChatGPT initiate product discovery for 16% of shoppers, but only 5% buy immediately after an AI recommendation—most verify through reviews, prices, and retailer sites first. Commerce teams must ensure consistent, accurate product information across all touchpoints, since AI recommendations only convert when backed by credible reviews and transparent policies.

AI assistants are reshaping early-stage product discovery but are not yet closing sales on their own. According to Feedvisor research, ChatGPT is where 16% of shoppers start looking for products, yet only 9% go there to actually purchase. When an AI assistant recommends a product, just 5% of shoppers buy it immediately; the rest check Google, Amazon, and other platforms for better prices and verification.

PartnerCentric's survey reveals the verification funnel: after an AI suggestion, 33% of shoppers check existing reviews, 22.3% compare prices, and 18.8% search Amazon or another retailer. Among shoppers in the top two AI-trust categories, 42.2% still want reviews before acting, while 31.2% go to check reviews immediately. For commerce practitioners, this means AI is a starting point, not a final verdict: brands must ensure reviews, product pages, pricing, and shipping policies are consistent and accurate across all channels, because inconsistencies surface gaps that AI cannot smooth over.

Retailers like Musely are adjusting strategy accordingly, focusing on SEO and ensuring accurate product information surfaces when consumers research via AI tools. The takeaway: being mentioned by AI is insufficient; brands must earn conversion by maintaining consistent, credible signals across reviews, policies, and product data that shoppers—and AI systems—will trust.
