Beardbrand built voice AI agent for customer support in one day

Beardbrand's founder created a voice customer service bot using xAI's Grok Bot and Grok Voice API in about a day, handling product recommendations and draft orders without coding expertise. For lean e-commerce teams, AI voice agents offer a scalable alternative to live phone support when staffing is limited.

Eric Bandholz, founder of Beardbrand, built a voice-powered customer service agent using xAI's Grok Bot platform and Grok Voice API in approximately one day. The bot conducts natural conversations with customers, asks clarifying questions about their beard care needs, recommends products based on preferences and popularity data, and generates draft orders for checkout via email. In a demonstration call, the bot guided a customer through product selection, identified Norse Winter Beard Oil as the top community choice, and confirmed order details before sending a payment link.

Beardbrand, a Shopify store with just 10 employees, has struggled to afford live phone support. Bandholz, who describes himself as a non-developer with basic API familiarity, used the X Premium Plus plan ($40 per month) to build the agent without writing code. The solution integrates with Shopify to access product data and customer information. The bot does not process payments over the phone for security reasons but creates draft orders that customers complete online. Bandholz plans to add Twilio texting functionality and test the system with actual customers through his private community, the Alliance.

This approach reflects a broader trend among small e-commerce operators adopting AI voice agents to scale customer service without proportional headcount growth. The low barrier to entry—no coding required, one-day build time—makes voice AI accessible to non-technical founders managing resource constraints.
