Etsy is implementing AI across its business to improve product discovery and seller growth while protecting the human creativity that defines its brand. CEO Kruti Patel Goyal stated on an analyst call that the company believes AI will fundamentally change how people shop, and Etsy aims to use the technology to help buyers discover items that feel uniquely right for them and help sellers reach more customers. The company is rolling out a seller assistant tool and expanding its gifting tool experience, while also deploying AI and machine learning to better understand shoppers' interests and improve their discovery experience.
Etsy recently implemented new rules to govern AI use in seller listings, including a ban on AI-generated functional guides such as patterns, recipes, and instructions, and a requirement that listings include at least one real product image. This approach reflects the paradox Patel Goyal articulated: as AI makes it easier to create and replicate products at scale, human creativity and craftsmanship will matter even more. For commerce practitioners, this signals that platform-level AI governance—not just adoption—is becoming a competitive differentiator, especially in categories where authenticity and originality command premium valuations.
Etsy's Q3 results validate this balanced strategy. Gross merchandise sales jumped 8.8% year-over-year to $2.6 billion and revenue increased nearly 11% to $692.5 million, while active buyers grew for the first time in two years, increasing 1% compared to last year to approximately 88 million on a trailing 12-month basis. The company refined its full-year gross merchandise sales guidance to expect growth of about 7%, compared to its previous guidance of mid-single-digit range growth.
