Lowe's launches drone delivery pilot with Wing and DoorDash

Lowe's has begun a drone delivery pilot at its Matthews, North Carolina store in partnership with DoorDash and Alphabet's Wing, offering over 100 SKUs with delivery in as fast as 20 minutes. For commerce operations teams, drone delivery represents a competitive fulfillment lever to reduce customer friction and accelerate project completion in home improvement retail.

Lowe's has launched a drone delivery pilot at a North Carolina store in partnership with DoorDash and Alphabet's Wing (Retail Dive - Technology). Eligible customers near the Matthews store, a Charlotte suburb, can order products through the DoorDash app and select drone delivery via Wing as an option. Wing drones can transport orders weighing about 2.5 pounds per flight, and deliveries are made in as fast as 20 minutes from the store (Retail Dive - Technology). More than 100 SKUs are available for delivery in the pilot, including screwdrivers, painter's tape, and caulk (Retail Dive - Technology).

Drone delivery addresses a real friction point in home improvement retail by reducing extra store runs that slow project completion. The program could expand to additional stores in the future (Retail Dive - Technology). This move positions Lowe's alongside major competitors like Walmart and Amazon, which are also expanding drone delivery programs to accelerate shipping speeds and improve customer convenience (Retail Dive - Technology).
