Shopify's enterprise research shows that AI-powered shopping has fundamentally changed how customers discover brands. More than half of AI-referred sessions on Shopify start directly on a product page, compared with about 20% for organic search (Shopify Enterprise Blog). Once an AI-referred visitor reaches a product page, they convert about 80% better than an organic-search visitor, and the channel is growing rapidly: AI-referred sessions grew 197% year over year, with orders up roughly 3x (Shopify Enterprise Blog). This shift means the research, shortlist, and decision now happen in AI conversations before shoppers ever see a brand's homepage.
To succeed in this environment, brands must meet two non-negotiable requirements. First, they need complete, accurate product data structured for machines to read—Google's Gemini models now parse a Shopping Graph of more than 50 billion product listings, with more than 2 billion refreshed every hour (Shopify Enterprise Blog). When AI drew on structured Shopify Catalog data instead of scraped feeds, referred shoppers converted 2x better (Shopify Enterprise Blog). Second, brands must build genuine trust through human-generated content—a global Reddit study of about 32,000 respondents found that honest experiences from everyday people are twice as trusted as AI-generated summaries when people decide what to buy (Shopify Enterprise Blog). About half of people say they often or always verify AI recommendations on Reddit before making a decision (Shopify Enterprise Blog).
For commerce practitioners, this means AI readiness is now commerce readiness. The fundamentals—accurate product data, honest policies, real reviews, and a repeatable brand story—have always separated strong retailers from average ones, but the machine now decides who gets recommended based on these factors. Brands that invest in data completeness and genuine community trust now are compounding a competitive advantage as AI becomes the primary discovery layer.
