Salesforce launches Carter, an AI shopping agent for commerce

Salesforce introduced Carter, a prebuilt AI agent that handles product questions, recommendations, and order updates on storefronts 24/7 using natural language understanding instead of scripted chatbot responses. For small business teams, Carter closes the gap between customer demand and limited staffing, reducing abandoned carts and support ticket volume without requiring development work or budget.

Salesforce has unveiled Carter, a prebuilt AI agent designed specifically for e-commerce storefronts. Carter operates as a digital teammate that understands complex, multi-part customer requests using natural language processing rather than keyword matching or decision-tree scripts. It is grounded in live product data, inventory levels, pricing, and customer history, enabling personalized recommendations and real-time answers to questions about sizing, availability, and order status.

Carter differs from traditional chatbots by understanding nuanced asks—such as "I need a red dress for a party, midi length, no sleeves, under $100"—and pulling live inventory to ensure it never promises out-of-stock items. The agent handles repetitive, around-the-clock tasks like product discovery, bundling recommendations, order tracking, and inventory alerts, freeing small business teams to focus on higher-touch customer interactions. According to Salesforce research, more than a third of commerce leaders report that AI has already made a measurable difference in product discovery, customer satisfaction, and loyalty. The company also notes that 88% of small businesses are already engaging with AI, with 74% reporting strong returns on investment.

Carter integrates into existing storefronts without requiring a rebuild and is part of Salesforce's Agentforce platform. It works alongside other digital teammates—Piper for marketing, Hunter for sales, and Casey for service—all grounded in the same customer data, so shoppers do not need to repeat information across channels. Concrete benefits cited include fewer abandoned carts, higher average order value through smart recommendations, reduced support ticket volume, and faster response times to common questions.
