Daydream, an AI-powered shopping agent co-founded by Lisa Yamner (former Google fashion vertical lead) and Julie Bornstein, has raised $50 million to transform how consumers discover fashion. The platform launched in January 2024 and now catalogs over 350 retail partners, 10,000 brands, and 3 million products, integrating directly with existing Google and affiliate feeds and onboarding new partners in approximately two days.
Unlike traditional search engines where brand queries dominate, Daydream observes that only 3% of searches name a specific brand. Instead, users search by occasion, lifestyle, and body type. The platform learns from user behavior: new shoppers start with simple queries like "red dress," but returning users escalate to richer, longer requests such as "Going to a Tulum vacation for five days. Help me dress like a Jacquemus ad." Daydream enriches product feeds using text, images, and input from real stylists to capture nuanced attributes—distinguishing an A-line pleated skirt or identifying why a white dress is inappropriate for a wedding guest. This approach levels the field between large brands with extensive feed teams and small Shopify shops with minimal data resources.
For commerce practitioners, the distinction between spec-based and taste-based buying is critical. In spec-based categories like electronics, agents can execute transactions quickly. In taste-based categories like fashion and home decor, Daydream's model recognizes that consumers want agency in the discovery process, not just automation. The shift from keyword-driven to lifestyle-driven search represents how category-native agents can reshape vertical commerce.
