eBay has trimmed shipping rates at Depop, the fashion marketplace it acquired in July for $1.4 billion, by giving the platform access to eBay's discounted carrier rates through the U.S. Postal Service, FedEx, and UPS. CEO Jamie Iannone stated that this access has already lowered Depop's shipping and parcel costs, making shipping investments more efficient. CFO Peggy Alford noted that reduced rates could encourage more transactions across the Depop marketplace, particularly at lower price points where shipping costs represent a large portion of the total transaction value.
Beyond rate reductions, eBay has deployed AI-powered shipping features designed to streamline seller operations and expand delivery reliability. The company launched an improved AI-powered delivery date model in six major markets—the U.S., China, U.K., France, Canada, and Poland—to increase the number of products offered with fast delivery promises while maintaining reliability. Through its "magical listing" tool, eBay now uses AI to estimate package size and weight, generate prepaid labels, and offer tracking automatically, eliminating manual steps sellers previously had to perform themselves. Additionally, eBay launched eBay International Shipping in the U.K. and Germany, handling transportation, customs, returns, and post-purchase support; in the U.K., the program is estimated to be up to 30% cheaper than the previous global shipping offering.
These initiatives reflect the growing integration of AI across online marketplaces to reduce friction in the shipping process and improve affordability, directly impacting seller conversion and customer acquisition—critical metrics for marketplace growth in competitive fashion e-commerce.
